The Bangladeshi government has formally linked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's proposed official visit to India with the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, asserting that a favorable diplomatic environment must be established prior to the trip. During a press briefing in Dhaka, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shahidul Karim stated that while bilateral discussions regarding the visit have been ongoing, the process was complicated by Sheikh Hasina's recent press conference in New Delhi. Dhaka is formally demanding the handover of Hasina—who has been convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity—along with suspects linked to the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, invoking the bilateral extradition treaty. As both nations maintain communication, Bangladesh has reiterated its commitment to a 'Bangladesh First' foreign policy framework while awaiting an official response from New Delhi regarding these extradition requests.
