Preparations to implement 'One Nation, One Election' across the country have intensified. PP Chaudhary, chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed on this matter, stated that the committee is working on a framework to enable simultaneous elections by the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. During a two-day meeting in Goa, the committee discussed potential challenges and solutions with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and his cabinet. The JPC has already visited several states, including Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Goa, to gather opinions from constitutional experts, academicians, and social organizations. Chaudhary claimed that about 99% of civil organizations and stakeholders support the proposal, and the committee is now focused on creating a model that can gain consensus among all political parties. Citing an economic study presented to the high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, Chaudhary highlighted that frequent elections cost the country around Rs 7 lakh crore. Simultaneous elections would not only prevent this economic drain but also minimize administrative disruptions, such as the deployment of government teachers for election duties, which disproportionately affects students from economically weaker sections. He added that PM Narendra Modi's vision is a major electoral reform that will improve governance, reduce costs, and aid India in becoming a developed nation by 2047.
