How Pandu’s Curse Turned into a Blessing?
One day, immersed in this worry, Pandu told Kunti, 'O auspicious one! You know about my curse. I cannot produce children myself, but I also do not wish to die without heirs. Therefore, by my wish and order, you should bear children through a worthy man. I will raise them as my own.'
He further explained that according to the scriptures, a man can be the father of 12 types of children, and there are ways other than biological birth to have heirs.
Before Pandu could finish, Kunti replied, 'What are you saying, my lord? How can I even think of union with any other man? You are the best among men. You have acquired great spiritual power through years of penance. Therefore, you will obtain children through your own power.'
Kunti then revealed a great secret from her life. She told Pandu about Sage Durvasa.
When she was young and living in the palace of her foster father King Kuntibhoja, the short-tempered sage Durvasa visited. Kunti served him with great devotion and care. Pleased with her service, Durvasa granted her a powerful mantra.
The sage said, 'With the correct use of this mantra, whichever deity you invoke will come under your control and grant you a son with qualities like that deity.'
Kunti told Pandu that the time had come to use this boon. She asked him to choose the deities he wished for. The children born through this method would be considered his own.
Hearing this, Pandu’s sorrow vanished instantly. He became overjoyed and asked Kunti to proceed with the ritual.
Thus, the curse that prevented Pandu from having children was turned into a blessing through Kunti’s divine mantra given by Sage Durvasa. This secret became the foundation for the birth of the Pandavas.
