Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an important bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France. During the meeting, PM Modi strongly raised the issue of the safety of Indian seafarers and emphasised the need for uninterrupted movement on global sea routes.

PM Modi told President Trump that the safety of lakhs of Indian seafarers working on international sea routes is a top priority for India. He highlighted recent attacks on merchant ships with Indian crew members in the Gulf region. Modi expressed hope that the upcoming peace agreement with Iran will give special importance to the safety of seafarers and keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

Responding to PM Modi, President Trump said that America will work together with India on this issue. He acknowledged the difficult nature of the seafaring profession and assured that both countries will collaborate to address the concerns.

PM Modi also stressed that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is crucial for the global economy and hoped for lasting peace in the Gulf region.

On the broader India-US relationship, President Trump said that the ties are very strong. He remarked that if India or PM Modi faces any attack, the US will stand firmly with them.

The meeting comes at a time when several merchant vessels with Indian crew have come under attack in recent weeks due to tensions in the Gulf. In one such incident, three Indian sailors lost their lives, prompting strong calls for action from the Indian opposition.

This high-level meeting between Modi and Trump is being seen as an important diplomatic engagement focusing on maritime security and strengthening bilateral ties.
