New Zealand midfielder Sarpreet Singh has created history by becoming the first player of Indian origin to feature in the starting XI of a FIFA World Cup match. The 27-year-old, born in Auckland to Punjabi parents, made his World Cup debut against Iran and played almost the entire match.

Sarpreet started in the No. 10 jersey and showed great confidence throughout the game. He attempted three shots on goal, though none found the net. He was substituted in the 90th minute as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

This achievement marks a proud moment for the Indian football community. Earlier in the tournament, Nishan Velupillay, another player of Indian origin, made his debut for Australia as a substitute.

Sarpreet’s journey is inspiring. He represented New Zealand at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017 and 2019. After making a name for himself in European club football, he has now taken Indian-rooted talent to the biggest stage in world football.

Before Sarpreet, Vikash Dhorasoo (France, 2006 World Cup) was the only other notable Indian-origin player to appear in a World Cup, but he did not start any match.

Sarpreet’s story is not just about personal success. It represents the growing presence of Indian-origin talent on the global football stage. From Auckland to the World Cup pitch, his journey shows that strong roots and big dreams can go hand in hand.
