Party Politics in Britain

In a dignified move, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party after 100 MPs from his own party asked him to step down. He accepted the decision gracefully and said he would remain in office until a new leader is elected.

Starmer led Labour to a massive victory in 2024 with a full majority, but declining popularity and recent by-election results led to this internal pressure. This contrasts sharply with Indian politics where parties like TMC and Shiv Sena are witnessing open rebellions, splits, and defections.

In Britain, there is no strict anti-defection law like India’s 10th Schedule. MPs can openly criticise their party leadership without losing their seat. Leadership changes happen through internal democratic processes and confidence votes.

While India’s system provides stability, it often suppresses internal dissent. Britain’s system is more flexible and accountable but can lead to instability, as seen with multiple Prime Ministers resigning before completing their terms in recent years.
