Ramasi Village in Bhagalpur to Become India's First 'Sindoor Gram'

Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour has adopted Ramasi village in Bhagalpur district to transform it into the country's first 'Sindoor Gram' (Vermilion Village). Spearheaded by Vice-Chancellor Dr. D.R. Singh and local scientists, the initiative aims to promote Sita Sindoor (Annatto) cultivation, generate self-employment, and empower women farmers.

Key Highlights of the Initiative:
- Planting and Distribution: During the launch event, 250 Sita Sindoor saplings were planted across an acre, and 100 women farmers received saplings along with horticulture tool kits, power knapsack sprayers, and sweeping machines.
- Industrial & Commercial Value: Sita Sindoor (Annatto) seeds yield natural powder (bixin), which is widely used as a natural food coloring agent by industries like Amul, as well as in other industrial applications. BAU has secured a patent for the sindoor technology and a GI tag for Sita Sindoor.
- Processing Unit and Diversification: Plans are underway to establish a local sindoor processing unit in the village, alongside promoting beekeeping, fisheries, goat rearing, and poultry to create diverse income sources for villagers. The university's startup cell will assist in packaging, branding, and market linkage.
