Referring a Friend for Job Backfired Heavily

📅 June 20, 2026 🏷️ India
Social media is often flooded with interesting stories related to jobs and interviews. Recently, one such incident sparked a major debate online.

A technician claimed that his company’s HR team now wants to take his interview again because the candidate he referred could not solve even a very simple coding question during the interview.

The matter came to light when a user named Aditi shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) along with a screenshot of an email from her company. She wrote in a humorous tone, 'I referred my friend for a job and now HR wants to take my interview again.'

The email stated that the candidate recommended by Aditi could not solve a basic coding problem. The recruitment team said this raises questions about Aditi’s judgment and ability to assess candidates. The company has therefore decided to conduct a new technical interview with her to re-evaluate her technical skills.

As soon as the post went viral, it triggered a flood of reactions. Some found it funny, while others questioned the company’s approach. One user wrote that this is why many people hesitate to refer unknown candidates. Referring someone is not just forwarding a resume — it also affects your own reputation.

Another user jokingly said the candidate performed so poorly that the impact reached the person who referred him.

Some people criticised the company’s decision, saying that if an employee has been performing well for a long time, taking their interview again just because of one bad candidate is not fair.

The incident has sparked a fresh debate on the referral system and the level of responsibility employees should bear when referring candidates.
