Soybean, Sunflower & Groundnut Prices Surge – Farmers Likely to Expand Oilseed Cultivation

With the kharif sowing season underway, rising prices of major oilseed crops are encouraging farmers to increase the area under cultivation. Soybean, groundnut, and sunflower prices are significantly higher than last year, prompting many states to prepare for expanded sowing of these crops.

### Strong Price Momentum
Soybean prices have shown consistent strength in recent months due to tight domestic supply and steady demand. In Indore mandi, soybean rates have reached around ₹68,000 per tonne, substantially higher than the same period last year. These prices are also well above the government’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹5,708 per quintal for the 2026-27 marketing season.

D.N. Pathak, Executive Director of the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), said that soybean-growing states are showing clear signs of area expansion. While it is early to quantify the exact increase, initial trends indicate growing farmer interest.

In Karnataka, sowing has already begun, with brisk seed purchases reported in districts like Haveri. Farmers appear to be responding positively to favourable market prices while making crop choices.

Groundnut prices remain firm in the Saurashtra region, while sunflower prices are also trading at better levels in Karnataka and Maharashtra compared to last year. This price strength is boosting farmer confidence.

### Expectation of Higher Sowing
Sanjeev Asthana, President of the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), noted that sustained good prices and improving market sentiment are likely to encourage farmers to expand the area under oilseed crops in the upcoming kharif season.

He added that the higher MSP announced for sunflower has given farmers extra confidence, which could also benefit other oilseed crops. In the long run, this could significantly support domestic oilseed production and help reduce India’s dependence on edible oil imports.

### Positive Outlook for Farmers
If the current price trend continues, experts believe there could be a noticeable increase in the cultivation area of soybean, groundnut, and sunflower this kharif season. This would be a welcome development for India’s oilseed sector, which has been striving for self-reliance.

Higher returns from oilseeds could bring much-needed relief and better income opportunities for farmers in major producing regions.

This surge in oilseed prices is expected to play a key role in boosting farmer income and strengthening domestic edible oil production in the coming months.
