VAR Controversy Erupts in FIFA World Cup, FIFA Issues Clarification
The incident occurred in the 14th minute when Switzerland were awarded a penalty after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler inside the box. Breel Embolo converted the penalty to give Switzerland the lead. However, many viewers and experts felt the Swiss player was in an offside position.
FIFA later stated that there was a technical issue with the broadcast graphics system, due to which the offside lines were not shown on TV. However, the VAR review process itself was not affected. The officials confirmed through their system that the player was not offside, and the penalty decision was correct.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw after Miro Muheim scored for Switzerland in injury time.
Former England footballer and commentator Gary Neville strongly criticised the lack of transparency. He said, 'This feels like dictatorship. It is completely ridiculous that they keep the evidence to themselves and donβt show it to the fans. Transparency should be immediate.'
FIFA reiterated that despite the technical glitch in graphics, the VAR protocol was followed correctly and the match officials made the right decision.
This controversy has once again sparked debate about the transparency and reliability of the VAR system in the World Cup.
