Where is Khamenei’s Body?

The funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will finally take place in July, more than four months after his death. Official Iranian media announced that funeral rites will begin on July 4 and he will be buried in Mashhad on July 9.

The long delay has triggered many questions on social media — where has his body been kept for 133 days and how was it preserved?

Khamenei’s death was reported after US-Israeli strikes in late February 2026, but Iran took time to confirm it. Many senior military commanders killed in the same strikes were buried earlier. The delay in Khamenei’s funeral is considered unusual in Shia Islamic tradition, which generally emphasises prompt burial.

No official information has been released about the location or condition of his body. Speculation is rife, especially since bodies of other officials were badly damaged and identified through DNA tests.

The absence of his son Mojtaba Khamenei in public view has also raised questions. Analysts suggest the delay may be politically motivated to send a strong message domestically and internationally.
