Who Will BJP Face in 2027 UP Elections?

The road to power in Delhi passes through Uttar Pradesh, and the road to power in Lucknow passes through Purvanchal. This old saying is once again in focus as the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections draw near.

Uttar Pradesh has been under BJP rule since 2017. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party which aimed for 400+ seats could only manage 240 nationally and saw a sharp decline in UP, winning just 33 seats compared to 62 in 2019 and 71 in 2014. The Samajwadi Party-led INDIA bloc emerged as the largest party in the state with 37 seats.

However, after strong performances in Haryana, Maharashtra, Assam, and West Bengal, the BJP is now fully focused on winning Uttar Pradesh for the third consecutive time in 2027.

The big question is: Who will be BJP’s main opponent in UP? Akhilesh Yadav’s SP had success with its PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Meanwhile, BJP has appointed Pankaj Choudhary, a Dalit leader, as state president, which is being seen as a strategic move to reach out to Dalit voters.

The opposition is trying to create new vote arithmetic, but alliance calculations remain complicated. Asaduddin Owaisi has kept the door open for alliance but wants equal respect and share. Congress is also exploring options with leaders like Chandrashekhar.

BJP leaders are projecting confidence, saying their real competition is with themselves. The party is working on strengthening its organisation and countering anti-incumbency after 10 years in power. Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya had earlier said that organisation is bigger than government, indicating internal efforts to strengthen the party structure.

Different regions of UP — Purvanchal, Western UP, Bundelkhand, and Awadh — have their own political dynamics. BJP faces the challenge of maintaining dominance across all regions while opposition parties try to forge unity against it.

The 2027 battle is being seen as a crucial test for both BJP and the opposition ahead of the 2029 general elections.
