A massive fire broke out early Monday morning at a four-story hotel in Tarapith, a prominent religious destination in West Bengal's Birbhum district, resulting in the deaths of 8 people. A total of 43 individuals were inside the hotel at the time of the incident, many of whom were devotees visiting the Tarapith temple for the final Monday of the Sawan month. The fire reportedly started on the ground floor around 4:30 AM and quickly spread dense smoke to the upper floors, trapping guests in their rooms. Fire engines rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control, while victims were rushed to the Rampurhat Government Medical College for treatment. Although initial claims pointed towards a short circuit near the reception, authorities stated that the exact cause is still under investigation. Officials noted that decorative and fiber materials inside the hotel caused the flames to spread rapidly. Police have detained one person in connection with negligence regarding the maintenance of firefighting equipment, and the district administration has ordered a special safety and electrical audit for all hotels and lodges in Tarapith.
