India to Build Next Bullet Train Corridor on Its Own

India is moving fast on its high-speed rail ambitions. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that work on the next Bullet Train corridor — Mumbai to Pune — will start next year. This project will be built entirely by India, unlike the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor which is being developed with Japanese assistance.

The 170 km Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train will reduce travel time to just 48 minutes. Speaking in Pune, the minister said that once operational, Mumbai and Pune will effectively become twin cities, boosting economic and cultural connectivity.

The minister also mentioned the upcoming Pune-Hyderabad Bullet Train corridor, which will cover 500 km in just 2 hours and 8 minutes.

In the 2026-27 Union Budget, the government announced 7 new high-speed rail corridors. These include:
- Mumbai-Pune
- Pune-Hyderabad
- Hyderabad-Bengaluru
- Hyderabad-Chennai
- Chennai-Bengaluru
- Delhi-Varanasi
- Varanasi-Siliguri

Work is already progressing rapidly on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. The first section between Surat and Vapi is expected to be operational by August 2027, with the full corridor likely to be completed by 2028. Trains on this route will run at a maximum speed of 320 km per hour.

The Mumbai-Pune corridor is expected to create a strong economic ecosystem connecting Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vapi, and Thane.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that India now has the capability to build Bullet Trains on its own. He said the government is working carefully on complex stations with heavy traffic to ensure minimum disruption and maximum safety.

This marks a major step in India's ambition to expand its high-speed rail network significantly in the coming years.
