Medical Education or Conversion Hub? UP Governor Orders Strict Action
In a major crackdown on alleged religious conversion activities inside medical campuses, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has directed the establishment of special Anti-Conversion Cells (Dharmantaran Roktham Cell) in all medical and dental colleges across the state.
The move comes after reports surfaced about suspected conversion drives targeting nursing students, junior doctors, and staff in prominent institutions like King George’s Medical University (KGMU) and Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow.
### Governor’s Firm Stand
Acting on her instructions as Chancellor, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University has issued orders to all affiliated medical and dental colleges to immediately constitute these special cells and submit compliance reports.
The cells will:
Closely monitor any suspicious activities or attempts to exert undue influence within college campuses and hostels.
Conduct regular awareness programs to educate students and staff about their rights and responsibilities.
Ensure prompt and strict action on any complaints as per university rules and law.
### Key Officials Behind the Initiative
The directive was issued following a letter from Governor’s Special Officer Dr. Sudhir M. Bobde and clear instructions from Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Amit Devgan.
### Background
Reports had earlier highlighted the involvement of certain external elements and suspected organisations trying to influence students and staff inside medical institutions. The Governor has taken the matter very seriously and instructed strong measures to prevent such activities in educational campuses.
This decisive step by the Raj Bhavan aims to strengthen security and vigilance mechanisms across Uttar Pradesh’s medical education institutions and ensure a safe academic environment free from religious conversion pressures.
