New Law on OBC Reservation Implemented in Bengal

The West Bengal Assembly passed two key amendment bills on OBC reservation following Calcutta High Court directions. The OBC quota has been reduced from 17% to 7% and 113 communities added without survey have been removed, leaving 66 communities.

The government also formally started the process for implementing Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by forming a committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.

Additionally, the Assembly passed the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, which includes provisions for preventive detention up to 12 months.
