Split in SP or BJP’s Mind Game?
With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, a new political narrative is emerging rapidly. The question is whether there is a real possibility of a split in the Samajwadi Party or if this is a psychological strategy by the BJP to weaken the main opposition party.
The speculation began when Om Prakash Rajbhar, president of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party and a BJP ally, claimed on social media that around 30 SP MPs could leave the party at any time. Shortly after, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya made a similar claim, saying 25-26 SP MPs might leave, but the BJP is not currently accepting them. Nishad Party chief Sanjay Nishad also added fuel to the fire by saying that some MPs are in touch with him.
Political observers note that recent splits in opposition parties have created an atmosphere where such rumours spread easily. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party gave a tough fight to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh and emerged as the largest party with 37 seats. Therefore, weakening SP politically is being seen as part of BJP’s strategy for the 2027 Assembly elections.
Samajwadi Party has strongly rejected these claims. Party leaders say that Om Prakash Rajbhar is only spreading rumours and the BJP is deliberately creating a false narrative to divert attention from issues like the alleged Ayodhya donation scam.
Experts believe that a major split in the Samajwadi Party is not easy in the current circumstances. However, there have been occasional rumours about some MPs, especially from Purvanchal. Despite this, the narrative of a split can be used effectively to weaken the opposition’s morale.
The coming months will be crucial as both BJP and SP prepare for the high-stakes 2027 battle in Uttar Pradesh.
