America’s AI Monopoly!

America’s growing control over advanced AI models and chips has sparked intense global debate about an ‘AI monopoly’. While countries like India are major users of AI, they are not its owners. This raises serious concerns about digital sovereignty, data security, and the need for indigenous AI development.

The Trump administration wants American companies to restrict access to advanced AI tools for other countries. Recently, the US blocked two powerful models from Anthropic for foreign users. Even if Indians are willing to pay, they cannot access the most powerful versions.

Nvidia, the world’s leading chipmaker, also restricts its best AI GPUs. Major AI companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are American, and their models are being used in military operations, including recent actions against Iran.

The US now views AI as a strategic weapon rather than just technology. Experts call this ‘AI Monopoly’. Europe has raised strong objections, and the issue was discussed at the G7 summit. Many countries are now advocating for ‘Sovereign AI’ — building their own AI systems to reduce dependence.

For India, this is both an opportunity and a challenge. India has a massive user base and abundant data, making it a prime testing ground for foreign AI companies. While data centres are being set up, concerns remain about data control, energy consumption, and long-term dependence.

The new restrictions on Anthropic models are a clear signal. If the US decides who gets access to advanced AI, it could control not just technology but also information flow and narratives. India needs to accelerate its IndiaAI Mission and build indigenous capabilities to avoid falling behind in the AI race.
