High-Bonnet Vehicles Becoming Lethal

A New York Times study has revealed that taller vehicle hoods in modern SUVs and pickup trucks have led to thousands of preventable pedestrian deaths in the US over the past 25 years.

Higher bonnets cause pedestrians to be thrown under the wheels instead of onto the hood, increasing the risk of fatal injuries even at low speeds. Every one-inch increase in bonnet height raises the risk of death by about 2.8%.

Between 2016 and 2024, over 3,000 additional deaths were linked to this design trend. The study also highlights reduced visibility due to thicker A-pillars.

With the rapid rise of big SUVs in India, experts warn that similar safety concerns are emerging here as well. The report raises important questions about balancing occupant safety with pedestrian protection in vehicle design.
