India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Takes Effect: Key Benefits for India
### Five Key Benefits for India:
1. **Cheaper Imports from the UK:** Tariffs on British goods entering India will see drastic reductions. Scotch whisky tariffs will drop from 150% to 40%, and automobile tariffs on luxury brands like Rolls Royce, Jaguar, and Land Rover will be slashed from 100% to 10%. Beauty product tariffs will also be significantly reduced or eliminated.
2. **Duty-Free Export Access:** 99% of Indian products—including textiles, footwear, and food products—will now enjoy '0%' tariff entry into the UK market, removing previous duties of 8-12% on chemicals, textiles, and base metals.
3. **Employment Opportunities:** The surge in exports, particularly in labor-intensive sectors like textiles, leather, and food processing, is expected to create millions of new jobs for MSMEs and industrial workers.
4. **National Insurance Exemption for Professionals:** Under the 'Double Contribution Convention' (DCC), Indian professionals working in the UK will no longer have to contribute 25% of their salary to UK social security. Instead, this portion will be deposited into their Indian Provident Fund (PF) accounts, earning 8.25% annual interest, tax-free.
5. **Investment Boost:** The FTA is set to encourage increased investment from UK companies in India, specifically in manufacturing and infrastructure, while expanding professional opportunities for Indian IT experts, engineers, and architects.
