India-US Trade Deal Stuck Again

📅 June 27, 2026 🏷️ Economy
The much-awaited trade deal between India and the United States is nearing completion but has hit a roadblock. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said talks are almost done, but India is waiting for a clear assurance on tariff benefits.

Goyal emphasised that Indian exports should get better tariff treatment compared to competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh. He said India cannot sign the deal until this comparative advantage is assured.

The proposed agreement is expected to cover tariffs, rules of origin, investment, and greater cooperation in multiple sectors. Both sides have been negotiating since February 6.

Earlier, an 18% tariff rate was discussed, but India wants it to be competitive and not disadvantageous compared to other trading partners.
