Iran Fires Drones in Strait of Hormuz, US Shoots Them Down

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated once again. The US military has claimed that it shot down several Iranian drones that were targeting commercial ships.

This incident occurred at a time when three Indian ships were also attacked in the region.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that Iran had launched multiple one-way attack drones aimed at commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. American forces successfully intercepted and destroyed all the drones. CENTCOM emphasised that the vital international shipping lane remains fully open and vessel movement continues uninterrupted.

US President Donald Trump also reacted strongly, stating that any attack on commercial ships, including Indian vessels, is completely unacceptable. He warned Iran to change its behaviour immediately.

However, neither India nor Iran has officially confirmed any drone attack on Indian-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident comes just days after India summoned the US diplomat for the second time this week to protest American actions against Indian crewed merchant vessels in the Gulf of Oman. Three Indian seafarers lost their lives in that incident.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also spoke to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and registered Indiaโ€™s strong protest.

The latest developments have further heightened concerns over the safety of international shipping routes in the Middle East amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
