Significant Surge in Soybean Imports: SOPA Report Highlights Supply Deficit

A sharp decline in domestic soybean availability has led to a massive increase in imports during the current oil year (October 2025 to September 2026). According to the latest data from the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), imports reached 7.77 lakh tonnes by the end of June 2026, compared to a mere 2,000 tonnes during the same period last year.

### Key Findings from the SOPA Report:
* **Total Import Outlook:** SOPA estimates total imports for the 2025-26 oil year could reach 9 lakh tonnes, driven by continued domestic supply constraints.
* **Production and Market Arrival:** Total soybean production is estimated at 110.26 lakh tonnes. So far, 77.5 lakh tonnes have arrived in the market, down from 89 lakh tonnes at this time last year.
* **Soymeal Trends:**
* **Production:** Down to 64.31 lakh tonnes (from 68.65 lakh tonnes).
* **Exports:** Significant drop to 9.02 lakh tonnes (from 15.60 lakh tonnes), due to high domestic demand and prices.
* **Domestic Consumption:** Increased demand from the livestock feed sector (48 lakh tonnes) and food industry (6.7 lakh tonnes).

### Future Projections:
SOPA Executive Director DN Pathak noted that the export estimate for soymeal has been revised downward from 11 lakh tonnes to 10 lakh tonnes for the full year. Conversely, domestic consumption projections have been increased to accommodate the growing demand within the country.
