Tezpur Litchi from Assam Gains Popularity in International Markets
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the export of the renowned 'Piyazi' variety of Tezpur Litchi is a matter of pride for the farmers of Assam. He added that this reflects the growing global recognition of Assam’s premium agricultural products. The government’s aim is to connect the state’s farmers and producers with the global value chain so that unique agricultural products from Assam can reach markets around the world.
The Chief Minister informed that Tezpur Litchi has strong demand in foreign countries. Recently, with the help of APEDA, 1,000 kg of Tezpur Litchi was exported to Dubai. Now, a fresh consignment of 500 kg has been sent to Singapore. This shipment will be transported via Druk Air flight through Bhutan to Singapore.
The Chief Minister revealed that the High Commissioner of Singapore was impressed with the quality of Tezpur Litchi and showed interest in purchasing 500 kg. However, due to limited production, large-scale exports are not yet possible. Currently, there are around 3,000 litchi trees in Tezpur. Due to high demand in Assam and other parts of the country, only the surplus quantity is available for export.
CM Sarma mentioned that he had recently sent Tezpur Litchi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union Ministers, who appreciated its taste and quality. He said that with proper planning and continuous efforts, Assam can take its unique agricultural products like Tezpur Litchi, Kaji Nemu (lemon), and Bhut Jolokia (chilli) to international markets. He also highlighted good export potential for jackfruit and ginger.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of maintaining quality and production standards for increasing exports. He urged farmers to follow prescribed norms for fertilizer use and maintain consistency from production to final product. He assured that the state government will make special efforts to promote the export of agricultural products in the coming years.
This development is expected to open new doors for Assam’s farmers and boost the state’s agricultural economy through international trade.
